A) Treatment/Proposal

Title - The Premier league Quest

Main Characters - All male professional football players in England between Leagues 2 to the Premier league.
The users character - John Walker.

Genre - Sports, competitive, simulation

Synopsis - The Premier League Quest focuses around one character which the user plays, the characters name can be decided by the player. At the start of the game the user is given a choice of join one League 2 team, once the team is chosen the character will then play games with their team against other teams in the league and the aim for the user is to win the league, and within 6 seasons the aim is for the user, to win the premier league.

The player is only 18 when the game begins, so he has plenty of career time to reach the premier league. Moreover, if the user is doing exceptionally well in the league then he may receive offers from other teams in the league, or teams from other leagues, this is a faster way of the user climbing up the leagues, but it all depends on the users performance at the team they begin with.

Moreover, once the campaign mode has been completed and the user has won the premier league, the user is then given two options, whether to start the campaign mode again at a different club, or to join a team online. The online team will consist of 10 other online players, every player will play in the position they chose at the beginning of the campaign mode and they will all play with the player which they have played with in the campaign mode, the user will be as good as it was in the campaign mode so how good each player is depends on how good the user was in the campaign mode.

Then, as a team, the team can either join league 2 and try and rise up the leagues offline, or, the team can play in season mode, where there are 10 divisions and they play against other online teams in an attempt to rise all the way up to division 1.

This game is similar to other football games such as PES and Fifa, however what these other games do not have which this game does is the online season mode. This game allows users to play as part of a team with their friends online against other teams of friends, this causes a competitive feature to the game as groups of friends can be playing against other groups in cup and league finals.

This sort of game would also be new to VR, as there are not many sports games available at the moment. So, this game would hopefully boost VR's popularity among other games, creating more competition in the market, then other games such as Fifa may make a VR version of their game to compete against this game. but as off right now, this game would be leading the football genre in Virtual reality, giving the game a great boost as more people would be persuaded to buy this game as it is something new, and people will want to try out the game especially with Virtual Reality. With Fifa and PES being such great hits on other platforms such as Playstation 4 and XBOX ONE, there is no reason why this game should not be such a great success on a new platform, unless the game has dramatic errors or just simply does not reach the standard of football games available on computer consoles.

Moreover, the game has levels as well, meaning there are more objectives other than reaching the premier league with your player. In the game there are numerous different challenges and levels which the player can try complete, for example; one challenge is joining a team on loan and scoring ten goals for that team, if the user completes the challenge they will be rewarded with a skills pack, which will improve the players certain skills for 5 games. Another challenge is being the top goal scorer in your league, challenges like these you will be rewarded with packs. Moreover, to move up a level, you have to complete all the challenges in the level, for example in your first season, there are easier challenges like complete 50 passes in your first season, score ten goals in the season, and score a hat-rick in your first season. Overall there are 5 levels, once you have completed all 5 levels your players overall rating will improve by 10 ratings, the player will be rated out of 99.

B) Production Schedule

C) Gameplay

Because this game has yet to be played or tested on this platform, the gameplay for this game will be different than say a Playstation version of the game. Because this game will be played on virtual reality, the actions which the player in the game does will be controlled by the actions of the user. So, on the Oculus Touch, the users actions will be controlled by the controllers which the platform uses, however for other Virtual Reality platforms, the actions will be controlled by sensors around the user, where the actions which the user does will be caught by the sensors and then displayed by the character in the game.

D) Target Audience

The games target audience is extremely broad, as the game will be available to play for children, the games target audience ranges from children as young as 3, all the way to adults. The game target audience will be virtually the same as Fifa's, as they are very similar games. However, the only difference between Fifa and The Premier League Quest is that Fifa is not available on Virtual Reality, and this is our games advantage as we have a whole platform which we can appeal to and Fifa cant, and this is going to be the games main target audience.

E) Relevant legal/ethical issues

The main legal issues is getting permission from the football clubs, players and leagues to allow them to feature on their game. If a team or player does not want to feature in the game then the game will not be allowed to use or create them. Other legal issues ensure that the game is fit for its rating, although there is no bad language, violence or sex scenes at all throughout the game, so the game will fit the 3+ rating. There are no ethical issues with the game, as the game does not face any ethical problems or cross any ethical boundaries.

F) Budget

Almost all games never actually release the budget of a game, and with many AAA games even the developers of the game will not even know the games budget, although one thing is for sure and that's that companies nowadays are spending a lot more money on marketing the game than the development of it. In 2009, EA executive Rich Hillman indicated in a speech that his company "now typically spends two or three times as much on marketing and advertising as it does on developing a game." An AAA game is a classification term used for games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion. A title considered to be AAA is therefore expected to be a high quality game or to be among the year's bestsellers, which this game is.

Therefore, in terms of The Premier League Quest's overall budget is expected to be around the £20-£30 million mark. This cost involves all the games costs, from advertisement to research to development. One reason why the game is so expensive to produce is because they have made the game on an almost new platform, which has not been used for this sort of game before, so extra money has been spent on testing and advertising; first of all to ensure the game works well with the platform, and also so that people are aware of the game and will buy it when available. The budget also accounts for 360 degree photos and videos for all football stadiums within these leagues, as well as any other major costs.

G) Game Visuals

Home Page

Here is the home page, this is the display shown before you enter the campaign or online mode, as you can see, it shows what team your character is currently playing for and displays all the game modes as well.

Moreover, once you are in the campaign mode the home page visuals change as shown below. Now, it display the stadium or your team as well as the campaign mode options.

Also, when you join a new team, you get given a tour round the club straight away. This character has just joined Manchester United, here is a visual of the player walking out to the pitch for the first time.

First Person Game Visuals

Furthermore, here is a visual from when the player has joined a non league side because the player has gone on loan there after a poor spell of appearances at their league 2 side. This player has joined non league side Hartlepool, here is a visual from the main menu of when the player is at this club:

Here is a visual from Level 1, where the player joins a League 2 side, this user has chosen to join Cambridge United, here is their menu page:

H) Platforms

The platforms which this game will be available on are PSVR, HTC Vive and Oculus Touch.

I) Flow Chart

J) Current Trends

Sports based games are a huge factor and percentage of all computer and console games. However, this genre is yet to break into the virtual reality industry, and this could be for many reasons. the current trend with virtual reality seems to be first person shooter games, this may be because the developers think this is the best genre for the industry, or, they are waiting till the industry grows till they begin introducing other kinds of games, so that they will not be making them unnecessarily in case the industry flops. Moreover, trends seem to occur due to a event in real life that has gathered a lot of speculation and interest. For example, WII sports became extremely popular and sold millions of copies, also making the WII console extremely popular, in the run up to the 2008 olympics. This is because there was a lot of talk about the upcoming olympics, and the game made it possible for everyone to participate in the olympics through the WII game, however 5 years later the console is basically unheard of or played. This shows that current sporting events which have a lot of interest and speculation around can highly boost a games interest and popularity, so, I would recommend producing this game around the 2018 Euros. This is because there would be a lot of hype around the competition and the game can hop onto that hype and gain a lot more publicity.

One reason why there are not many successful football games available is because there is such big competition in terms of game graphics with Fifa, they have led the football games market for a very long time now, but are yet to make a VR version of the game, so hopefully beating them to the market and coming with a high enough standard our game can easily compete against Fifa.

K) Characters

Other than the player which the user plays. Other characters in the game will be players which play for every team within Leagues 2 up to the Premier League. Moreover, from Leagues 2 to the Championship, the managers will be animated characters and not the actual teams managers, however in the Premier League the managers will be the real teams managers, and not animated characters. Also, when the user joins his first League 2 team, there will be a player at the team called Alex Caloran, this player is going to be hard on your character, and his aim is to show the character what 'real football' is like and 'kindly' introduce the character to the football league, making your start that little bit harder.

Comments

  1. Getting there Oli. I think you need to do a few more things:

    1) (D) justify ideas in relation to current trends in the UK computer/console game market
e.g. where are football games at and what needs to be next? (VR)

    2) (M) The treatment/ proposal includes platform, levels, synopsis and characters.
You have synopsis but should create a map or flow diagram of the levels as well as a list of potential characters

    3) (M) Visuals are produced for each level of gameplay
I would recreate a POV shot for each division showing the crowd and stadiums getting bigger.

    4) Budget should account for 360 degree VR photography for all football league grounds and any other major cost!!

  2. I still think you need to do the following from previous post::

    1) Use a separate header, trends could be about genre, style , gameplay (VR) or budget oriented eg http://www.economist.com/blogs/economist-explains/2014/09/economist-explains-15

    2) Still need list of characters

    3) How are the visuals going to be distinguished between each level?

4)Budget should be in a table including (other major costs ) ?

  3. You need to tell us what controls there are for gameplay and more tactical issue . You should include a cure mechanics diagram. http://rubycowgames.com/core-mechanic-monster-zoo/
