Analysis of a range of computer/console games:
Game 1 - Fifa 17 - PS4
A) Genre
EA Sports have been very successful with Fifa as it has become one of the most popular console games in the world. Fifa falls under the sports category, considering it is a game entirely based around football it would be very hard to argue that it falls under any other category. Fifa is also a simulation game as it follows a story and a process.
B) Narrative/Storyline
Fifa 17 was the first ever Fifa to follow a story line. Usually with other Fifa's the whole game was centred around its kick off centre, where people could play against each other, and ultimate team, where people could play online against each other with the team which they have made. However, Fifa 17 has introduced The Journey, where users play the role of Alex Hunter, a new player beginning his career in the premier league. The user then plays with Hunter and tries to improve his footballing ability and his footballing career, the user will play one season with the player and the storyline ends at the end of the season.
C) Production Process
The production process for a game as big as Fifa is extremely long. Fifa has developed an enormous amount since the first ever release of the game was produced, they have changed and adapted numerous game modes as well as adding new features and overall bettering the game each year in terms of graphics and realism. In the image to the side you can gather an idea of all the different things EA have to cover when going through the production process of Fifa each year, this is only an idea of what they have to cover and is this is a much smaller scale of what the amount they will actually cover.
D) Characters
As Fifa 17 is based on actual football, the characters in the game are all real people and professional footballers. This is why Fifa has such a large database of characters, as they have to cover each player for each team, and every year Fifa seems to broaden their database by covering more teams and more leagues each year.
E) Gameplay
Fifa has adapted the gameplay of the game a lot since its first ever release, they tend to add at least 1 new feature each year, keeping their users entertained with something new and making sure that that buy and update to the new version of the game when it is released. In Fifa 17, you have multiple choices of what to play when playing the game, you can choose from ultimate team, to the journey, career mode, and kick off.
F) Target Audience
Fifa have the advantage that they have a game based on a subject which appeals to large percentage of the population in MEDC countries. Football, being the most popular sport in the world, is a very large marketplace, and Fifa have done extremely well in making themselves the best game based on football around. Meaning that their target audience is primarily football fans, and this ranges from as young as 4 year olds to adults.
G) Platforms
As of right now, there are numerous platforms of which you can play Fifa from; PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. Fifa are yet to produce a VR type game, but i'm sure they will in the future.
Game 2 - Grand Theft Auto V - PS4
A) Genre
Grand Theft Auto, GTA, is a first person shooter game which follows the story of three different characters. The game is story based where you can choose a character to be and from there on you play as that character and try to complete all the missions. The game falls under two genres, which are action-adventure and third person shooter.
B) Narrative/Storyline
Grand Theft Auto V is an action-adventure game played from either a first-person or third-person view. Players complete missions, linear scenarios with set objectives to progress through the story. Outside of missions, players may freely roam the open world. Composed of the San Andreas open countryside area and the fictional city of Los Santos. The missions are completed in a group of three characters; Michael Townley, Trevor Philips, and Brad Snider, you choose a character to be at the start but can swap character at any time throughout the missions depending on who you want to be and what sort of of role you want to play in the missions, the missions end in the completion of a bank heist and their run from the FBI begins there.
C) Production Process
The development of Grand Theft Auto V began after Grand Theft Auto IV's release in April 2008. Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto V on 17 September 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, on 18 November 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and on 14 April 2015 for Microsoft Windows, as the fifteenth entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. Rockstar North, the core 360-person team behind the game, co-opted studios owned by parent company Rockstar Games to facilitate development between a full team of over 1,000. These included Rockstar San Diego, Rockstar Leeds, Rockstar Toronto, Rockstar New England, and Rockstar London. Technical director Adam Fowler said that, while development was shared between studios in different countries, the process involved close collaboration between the core team and others. This was necessary because many mechanics in the game work in tandem, which would have created difficulties if studios did not communicate with each other.
So as you can see a lot of thought, effort, and team work went into the production of the game, making sure that every little detail about the game was correct and up to standard. This is why thousands of people helped the production of the game, so that no one would have missed anything and everything was checked through numerous times, but also so that everything could be done to the possible highest standard as soon as possible, even though it still took roughly 5 years to produce.
As said there are numerous different producers all working on different aspects of the overall game, here are some of the people working on the music production for the game; Leslie Benzies, Dan Houser, Flying Lotus, Woody Jackson and Sam Houser - who is the president of rock star games, who are the main producers of the overall game.
D) Characters
Within the game there are three main characters of which you can choose to play with, these are; Michael Townley, Trevor Philips, and Brad Snider. Moreover, other characters in the game are Devin Weston and Steve Haines, these two are the two FBI agents looking for the three characters after the completion of their heist. Other than these characters there are characters there are 'dead' characters in the free roaming world of which these characters have no real interference with you unless you choose to do so.
E) Gameplay
Grand Theft Auto V is an open world, action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 17 September 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and on 18 November 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On PlayStation, you use the R2 button to shoot or knife, L2 to aim, square to jump, X to run and the analog sticks to move in the direction you choose, the buttons are the same for the XBOX but they are different for that controller.
F) Target Audience
There is no distinct target audience for GTA V, this is because the previous Grand Theft Auto's was played by such a diverse group of people that targeting the game towards one group of the players would be a bad idea. If you were to generalise the game for a target market the market would be males between the age of 18 to 50. This is as people of all age splay the game but within this age bracket contains the larges majority of the games players.
G) Platfroms
GTA V is available on PS3, PS4, XBOX 360, XBOX ONE and Microsoft Windows.
Game 3 - Call of Duty Advanced Warfare - PS4
A) Genre
Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is a first person shooter game where you play against other online competitors or you can play the story mode and complete all the missions the game has produced for you.
B) Narrative/Storyline
In 2054, North Korea has developed advanced technologies, enabling them to turn the tide against South Korea. After a briefing by Sergeant Cormack (Russell Richardson), United States Marine Corps best friends Private First Class Jack Mitchell (Troy Baker) and Private Will Irons (Paul Telfer) take part in a massive drop shock raid against the North Koreans in Seoul, under the command of Cormack. Will is killed in action after protecting Mitchell, who has his left arm severed and is forced to be discharged from military service. After attending Will's funeral, Mitchell is offered a position in Atlas Corporation, the world's most powerful private military contractor, by CEO Jonathan Irons (Kevin Spacey), Will's father, and is also given an advanced prosthetic hand to replace his lost one.
C) Production Process
Advanced Warfare is the first Call of Duty title since Call of Duty 2 to use an engine which has had the majority of it re-written and built-up from scratch by Sledgehammer. Sledgehammer were the secondary team working behind the game, with Activision being the primary team focusing on the overall game, where Sledgehammer focussed more on the animation and graphics, especially for the Microsoft version of the game. Another objective that Sledgehammer accomplished with Advanced Warfare were the animations. The facial animating system and set is the same as James Cameron's upcoming Avatar 2, a first for Call of Duty. According to Activision, the new three-year Call of Duty development cycle meant that Advanced Warfare developer Sledgehammer Games was able to create a 'near photorealistic' world unlike any Call of Duty before. The Call of Duty games are published and owned by Activision. While Infinity Ward is still a developer, Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games also develop several of the titles with the release of the studios' games alternating with each other.
D) Characters
This version of Call of Duty features some new, well known faces and voices in the story mode. The main addition being Kevin Spacey who plays the role of Jonathan Irones. Moreover, with other characters being Gideon Emery who plays Gideon and Helen Sadler who plays the female reporter.
E) Gameplay
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the best game in the series since Black Ops II as far as single-player campaigns go. It's a far, far better game than Call of Duty: Ghosts, and more interesting and memorable than Modern Warfare 3. Sledgehammer Games has put together a single-player experience that's polished and fun, moving the series forward into the near future while still retaining the trademark Call of Duty experience. And while it shares a lot in common with its predecessors, it's also a smarter game and one of the more enjoyable Call of Duty titles I've played in years. In terms of buttons, on PlayStation you use R2 to shoot and L2 to aim, X to run and square to jump, and both analog sticks to move and loom around, the buttons are similar for other platforms but with different buttons represented on their controllers.
F) Target Audience
The target audience for virtually all Call of Duty games remains the same, and this is men aged 18-50. Although the game is very popular for younger teenagers, Activision has to target their game towards the older age bracket due to the obscene scenes and violence in the story mode which is not suitable for those of a younger age than 18. So they target the game towards this older bracket in the hope that everyone around this target audience will buy, play, and enjoy the game just as much.
G) Platforms
The platforms available for this Call of Duty are: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows.
