The company which i am going to be focusing on is Sony, Sony's company mission is to be a company which inspires and fulfils your curiosity. Their unlimited passion for technology, content and services, and relentless pursuit of innovation, drives them to deliver ground-breaking new excitement and entertainment in ways that only Sony can. Creating unique new cultures and experiences.

Sony is a company which is always up to date with new and emerging technology, a good example of this is how they are already virtually at the forefront of the new arising concept of Virtual Reality. They were exceptionally quick to the mark in following companies such as Oculus and HTC in producing their own Virtual Reality headset and platform, as this is an area where they knew if were slow to start in joining the bandwagon then they would immediately be at a disadvantage and would have much less hope in making a mark in this industry.

A) Structure:

Sony has numerous subsidiary selling points and business units other than the well known Game and Network services. Sony has been able to focus more on each unit by splitting out business units across the Sony Group, in order to reinforce the competitiveness of each business, and ensure clearly attributable accountability and responsibility. In addition to Game & Network Services, Sony also has Mobile Communications, Pictures, Music and certain other Sony Group businesses that were already operating autonomously as subsidiaries, in July 2014 Sony split out its TV business, followed by its Video & Sound business in October 2015. The Company also split out and established its semiconductor business as a wholly owned subsidiary in April 2016. Sony is also exploring the split out of its Imaging Products and Solutions Sector.

B) Platfrom technology:

Sony has adapted its main selling point, which is the PlayStation, to be able to use and host their new console which is the PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR, known by the codename Project Morpheus during development, is a virtual reality head-mounted display developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, which launched on October 13, 2016. It was designed to be fully functional with the PlayStation 4 home video game console. So, in order for people to be able to use the PlayStation VR they will need a PlayStation 4 console as well.

C)  Game Types

The virtual reality game types and genres at the moment have much less variety than that of other consoles. For example, on the PlayStation 4 you can buy a game based on almost anything, this is because the market for games on this platform is much larger and has been much more developed than that of what the VR market has been so far. Currently, there are only a few games available for the PlayStation VR, two of which being; Robinson: The Journey, and The London Heist. Both of these games are based on action and adventure, this is probable as it is much easier to base VR games on this genre as VR needs movement and activity in games for the user to be kept satisfied and entertained, as the user is constantly going to be on the move in an action game whereas in a story game the user will be found with much less to do and me be bored of the game much easier.

D) Games on multi-platforms

There are already several VR games that can be played on different VR platforms. Currently, the games that have already made an appearance on multi platforms are yet to make a version of the game for the PS VR, this is as the PS VR is relatively new and the developers have not had a chance to create a version for this platform yet. An example of a game which is available on more than one VR platform is Heaven Forest, which is available on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift CV1. However, when the PS VR becomes more popular, more games will be released on the platform and developers will begin developing their games so that they are compatible with the PS VR.

E) Regulatory Bodies

PlayStation will keep the same regulatory bodies as they have for their previous consoles for their new PS VR. This means that Sony will now have another platform to regulate, however as this platform is hosted by the PS4 then Sony will most likely keep the exact same regulations for the PS VR as what the PS4 has. The regulatory bodies which Sony have used in the past to help regulate games for their platforms are PEGI and the BBFC, Pan European Game Information (PEGI) is a European video game content rating system established to help European consumers make informed decisions when buying video games or apps through the use of age recommendations and content descriptors.

F) Development software

All the games created for Virtual Reality games are created by games developers and development companies. Often, many developers work together on a game, this makes the overall process much quicker and also gives more of an outlook on the game having different opinions come together. In April 2016, Sony said they had 230 developers working on 50 game titles that should be ready for release by the end of the year, so as you can see Sony are trying to get things started themselves and set the standard of which other developers will join and begin developing and adapting their own games to be suitable for the PS VR. Furthermore, the software which the developers use to develop their games varies from developer to developer. Most of the time developers like using software which they are familiar with and what they they know works well, this is why many developers use their own software which they have developed, they do this so that they are fully in control and they can make adjustments to anything they want if they think it is necessary. However, there are numerous different software out their for everyone, and the most popular software used to develop VR which is not a specific developers software are Unity and Vizard.
